Green Solutions
One aspect of Enterprise Data Management (EDM) that has increasingly received more attention and consequently has become more important over the last decade is the direct and indirect power consumption of Data storage and processing equipment and the usage of environmentally friendly and possibly recyclable materials in computing. Not only from the vantage point of saving money, but also from reducing the burden it puts on natural resources and the environment, hence the acronym of Green Solutions. Direct power consumption is the consumption by the data-storage and processing equipment itself. Indirect power consumption is the consumption by the supporting environment and equipment like HVAC equipment, cooling fans, power supplies, etc.

Three Levels of Green EDM Solutions can be identified:
  • CPU or DPU level solutions
    • Solutions at this level address power efficiency and environmental-friendliness at the lowest or most fundamental level of data processing. Solutions at this level focus on the energy-efficiency of the equipment and the equipment only. No special consideration is given to function, possible consolidation or integration of equipment. Typical solutions revolve around replacing old with new equipment that have much higher (energy star) efficiency ratings. These so-called "rip & replace" strategies are, however, expensive and the return on investment relatively limited.
  • Workgroup level solutions
    • Solutions at this level focus on power efficiency and energy savings achieved by consolidation. Improving hardware resource utilization by consolidating and virtualization of servers and data storage is the paradigm at this level.
  • Datacenter level solutions
    • To manage server sprawl, exponential data growth, power consumption, and nearly unmanageable infrastructures, many IT organizations are turning to data-center virtualization and blade-server technologies.
