Disaster Recovery Solutions
Disaster Recovery (DR) Solutions actually transcend the 4 P's of Data Management, with aspects of all 4 P's, and have as goal to
reach specific levels of redundancy in the following 4 dimensions; Data, Infrastructure, Applications & Processes and, last but not least,
People. The ultimate goal is to build redundancy in the organization in all the dimensions to achieve business continuity over time:
- Data Dimension
- These solutions have as goal to build redundancy in the data-set and essentially have been discussed in
the data protection category. Different levels can be identified that start with the
most basic of Data DR, namely local Backups of the data set, and on the most sophisticated level (Level 0), Continuous Data
Protection (CDP). At this level the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) equals 0 and the Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is infinite.
- Infrastructure Dimension
-
The Infrastructure Dimension of Disaster Recovery addresses the aspect of redundancy of the (IT) infrastructure. Examples are
Data Processing and Storage equipment , Voice and Data networks, Real Estate and Utilities. Just like in the data dimension,
different levels can be identified where the lowest level is active/passive and the highest level is active/active or a so-called
"hot" site.
- Application and Processes Dimension
- Solutions in this dimension have as goal to build redundancy in the applications and business processes that are fundamental to
business continuity. Example applications are Messaging, Database, ERP, F&P, Authentication, etc. As in the data and infrastructure
dimension, different levels can be identified where, on the basic level, the applications are on passive standby and, on the highest
level, are highly available in so-called Active-Active clustering environments.
- People
- Possibly the most important dimension focuses on the redundancy of the people and their specific functions or roles in the organization.
It is the people that actually use the Infrastructure and applications to turn the data into information. Achieving the highest level
of redundancy in this dimension for every business is the hardest to achieve and most expensive as well.
