Data Protection
Data Protection revolves around the question on how well data in the organization, whether in motion or at rest, is protected against (un)intentional compromise of its existence and integrity. Even though some protection solutions transcend both, they typically can be classified in one of two categories: preventative or restorative.
- Preventative Data Protection solutions
- Preventative Solutions revolve around keeping the data-set intact and essentially involve access control, encryption, fault-tolerance and redundancy. Example solutions are AD, PGP VPNs and RAID. Most access control and encryption solutions are software-based, while most fault-tolerant and redundancy solutions are hardware-based.
- Restorative Data Protection solutions

Restorative Solutions revolve around repairing the data-set after compromise has occurred. Restorative solutions essentially involve repairing a portion of the compromised data-set or replacing it with a copy that is known to be good (golden copy). Example solutions are:
- Backup & Recovery Solutions
- Replication and Mirroring Solutions
- Failover Solutions
- Continuous Data Protection (CDP) Solutions
- Disaster Recovery (DR) Solutions
